Marais family traumatised after assault

Family assaulted at home.

Four armed suspects jumped through a window to gain access to a family’s house in Endicott last Sunday.

They were armed with a firearm, a knobkierie and two knives.

Kobus Marais (64), his wife Lilly Marais (79) and Gerda Williams (55) were watching TV at the time of the incident.

It was approximately 8pm, when they heard the sound of shattering glass and saw the airborne suspects.

Kobus says it is a picture printed in his memory that is hard to forget.

Three of the suspects immediately put their hands over the victims’ mouths and ordered them to keep quiet, while the fourth suspect cut the telephone cord as well as the cord of the heater.

“One of the suspects pulled out shoelaces from his pocket and tied my hands behind my back, Gerda’s hands and feet as well as Lilly’s hands with the cut-off cords,” he says.

He had to watch how the suspects dragged his wife away from him, slapped and kicked her and threatened to kill her, while the suspect armed with a gun, held it against Kobus’ head.

“I asked them not to hurt my wife, but they continued to assault her and stood on her,” he says.

One of the suspects stayed with Lilly, and one with Gerda while the other two suspects ordered Kobus to take them to the safe.

However, Lilly had the keys to the safe and was dragged to another bedroom where she handed them the keys to the safe.

Three of the suspects opened a cupboard, took out handbags from it and put the money removed from the safe into the bags.

According to Kobus the suspects also took jewellery and pulled of his specially made wedding band from his finger.

The suspects took Kobus to the shop attached to the house and also removed cash from the two tills in the shop.

Kobus pressed the panic button under the counter and when the alarm went off all four suspects ran to the same window they used to gain entry to the house and escaped.

Lilly, who suffered two broken ribs from the assault, says she begged one of the suspects to stop kicking her.

However, he continued kicking her.

Although the family is severely traumatised, they are impressed with the speedy reaction from the Springs police.

Kobus says people should make sure their security system is in place and that they have proper lighting outside.

Capt Johannes Ramphora says the suspects took three cellphones, an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene on foot.

“The video footage will help us with the investigation,” he says.
